Recently I was talking with a friend about a girls night out and we discovered that we both had wanted to take cake decorating classes, but had never done it. So we decided to forgo our original plan for a girls night out and take a cake decorating class instead. (And get 4 girls nights out instead of one in the process!) And with two classes down in class 1 we've already signed up for class 2 next month. Bring on the girls time out! So let's just say there will be some cake to eat around our house for the next couple of months. :-)
Here is my "first" cake. Not my first cake ever, but my first from class. We were to do a character cake pan (I don't own one) or we could do a rainbow cake (or find any coloring page to use). I went with something I found and then added stems and a bow freehand. The colors aren't quite what I'd originally planned, but apparently neither my friend or I are very good at estimating how much icing to color just yet. So we icing bags to use up colors. And this is what I ended up with.

On the inside it is a chocolate fudge cake. YUM! So yummy in fact that last night after dinner little man ate a piece. I mean really ate. As in asked for another piece, ate. I've never seen him take more than a single bite of cake so I think it is safe to say he liked it.
Next week will be cupcakes. And if I get it together half a cake recipe will be for the cupcakes and the other half will be for a round cake that will go into the freezer for a future class.
Oh, and I should mention that our daughter loves that I am taking this class. Of course I need to hide my class book or she keeps finding things she'd like to add to her order for a birthday cake. Hopefully in the next month I'll have enough knowledge to make her birthday cake! :-)
